Salmonid Association of Eastern Newfoundland

SAEN ATTENDS DFO TECHNICAL BRIEFING ON STATUS OF ATLANTIC SALMON IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR. 

March 15, 2019 

On March 11, 2019, several board members from the Salmonid Association of Eastern Newfoundland attended an online technical briefing, held by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, regarding the status of Atlantic Salmon in Newfoundland and Labrador. During the technical briefing, DFO Science delivered a presentation and answered questions pertaining to the current stock status of Atlantic Salmon in NL. 

The overall status was presented as follows: 

​For Labrador

• 2 of the 4 assessed rivers are in the critical zone. Of the remaining assessed rivers, one was in the cautious zone, and the other was in the healthy zone.

For Newfoundland

• 8 of the 17 assessed rivers are in the critical zone. Of the remaining rivers, 2 are in the cautious zone and 7 are in the healthy zone. 
  Note to the above: Stock status could not be determined on one river (Northwest River – Port Blandford) due to an incomplete count of migrating salmon in 2018.
