Educate, Protect, Rebuild
For centuries the trout and salmon of Newfoundland and Labrador have provided both food and sport. These fish belong to the "salmonid" family and face more perils today than ever before.
Many migrate and therefore travel between river and ocean to spawn, feed and grow. International fisheries, by-catches, mismanagement, pollution, poaching, and natural factors have all taken their toll on these water wonders.
Human activity continues to deplete the ecosystems the salmon, sea-run trout, and trout rely upon to survive. Sea-run brook trout, in particular, have virtually disappeared from most Newfoundland watersheds.
There is not a person alive who has seen fish populations that resemble the numbers once enjoyed by our ancestors.
For over a quarter-century SAEN has strived to:
- EDUCATE fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians about our fish and the need for conservation.
- PROTECT our remaining species through conservation, providing technical advice to industry and government.
- REBUILD our native stocks.
Since 1979 SAEN has initiated projects worth more than $6 Million dollars involving conservation, research, education, and enhancement projects.
SAEN is a volunteer organization led by a board of directors who are elected by the general membership. Board and regular members also participate through a committee and special project structure to further the vision of wise management of Atlantic Salmon and trout in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Our goals, simply stated, are:
- EDUCATION
- CONSERVATION
- PROTECTION
- ENHANCEMENT
- STEWARDSHIP
- PROMOTION
While SAEN advances its vision through goals, strategies, and action plans, we also have a fun side.
Join SAEN and become involved in rod-building, fly- tying, river talks, moose stews, annual dinner and auction, clean up campaigns, and other activities.
Join SAEN and voice your opinion for the salmon, the trout and the watery world in which they must survive.
Join SAEN as a corporate or an individual member and make your commitment.
