About the Guenter Behr Wild Atlantic Salmon Conservation Award
The Guenter Behr Wild Atlantic Salmon Conservation Award is SAEN’s longest standing award. It was established in 1980 in memory of Mr. Guenter Behr, an avid outdoorsman and conservationist, who passed away in 1979. Mr. Behr practiced conservation in all his outdoor activities. He was truly one of those early conservationists.
With already 20 years of conservation activities under his belt, he joined SAEN in 1979 as one of its founding Board of Directors and was instrumental in assisting the Association during the preliminary stages of its organization.
The award is presented annually and honours those individuals, groups, corporations, or agencies which have demonstrated outstanding conservation or protection activities related to the salmon and trout populations within our province.
From a list of nominees a panel of judges shall choose the person to receive the award which will be presented at the SAEN Moose Stew Dinner in the fall of the year.

This year, we were honoured to present the Guenter Behr Conservation Award to this well-deserved recipient, Dr. Rex Porter. Rex's list of accomplishments over 40 plus years is very impressive. He went above and beyond his role as a DFO scientist and has continued since his retirement from government. He has overseen numerous enhancement activities, including forward thinking on new and innovative approaches to such. Rex is a strong advocate for the value of community stewardship and ownership in meeting conservation goals. He supported many groups over the years in this regard, while he deftly avoided any perceptions of conflict of interest with his "day job". His work and passion on this front very much continue during his retirement years. Congratulations to Rex on being the recipient of this prestigious award! |
