Local River Stewardship Group Wins Conservation Award

We have the winners of the 2005 Lee Wulff, Newfoundland & Labrador Fly Tying Competition. We would like to thank all those who sent in entries. We had a tremendous response and the judging was extremely difficult due to all the quality entries. The theme for this year's competition was the Humber River. The "Mighty Humber" is the second largest salmon river on the island portion of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Upper Humber is renowned for its Big Falls where the great leapers can be viewed at their best at the Sir Richard Squires Park. The Lower Humber is famous for its abundance of big salmon, where tradition dictates that it is not called a salmon unless it is over twenty pounds. The competition had two categories of salmon flies; one for the standard hair wing wet fly and another for a classic feathered pattern. As such, participants were requested to submit a Humber River Classic fly and/or a Humber River Hair Wing fly in the competition. Unfortunately, there was no contest for the Classic category. However, three winners were named in the Hair Wing category. They are: |

SAEN Rewards Anglers for Sending in their Salmon catch Logbooks
On November 17th, 2005, Salmonid Association of Eastern Newfoundland Inc. (SAEN) Past President Don Norman joined members of DFO to draw the names of three lucky anglers. The draw was sponsored by SAEN and DFO to encourage anglers to return their salmon fishing logs to DFO.
Salmon anglers in Newfoundland and Labrador are required to maintain a log of their annual fishing activity. At the end of the season this log must be submitted to DFO who in turn use this data in their salmon management and scientific research efforts. All anglers who returned their logs by the draw date, whether by mail or electronically, were entered into the draw.
First prize of a rod, one year membership to SAEN, salmon and trout flies and bugs and a SAEN shirt was won by Mr. Lester Noseworthy of Botwood, NL. Mr. Noseworthy (left in picture) was presented the rod by Mr. Kevin Hurley, Fisheries Officer (right in picture).
The second prize of a SAEN shirt, salmon / trout flies and bugs, fly box and one year membership to SAEN went to Mr. Gordon Hiscock of Grand Falls/Windsor NL.
The third prize of a salmon / trout flies and bugs, one year membership, and pocket knife was won by Mr. Larry Peddle of Cottlesville, NL.
SAEN and DFO wish to congratulate the winners and extend their thanks to all anglers who returned their angling logs.

The Harry's River Salmon Working Group (HRSWG) has been awarded the 2005 Guenter Behr Salmonid Conservation award by the Salmonid Association of Eastern Newfoundland (SAEN) for its work in preserving and rebuilding the salmon of Harry's River in Bay St. George. The salmon returns increased from less than 50% of spawning requirements to 91% in three years. HRSWG has proven that local groups can make a difference on their home rivers and have become an inspiration for other groups in all parts of the province.
