Twice each month (the 2nd Tuesday and last Thursday) from September through May, S.A.E.N. sponsors a gathering of fly tiers from the St. John's area.
Meeting at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Room S-2018 of the Science Building, devotees of the art and science of outsmarting fish practice their craft. The evening begins around 7:30 and usually goes on until 10:30 or later. Everyone is welcome to attend, so why not join us? You don't have to be a member of S.A.E.N.; you don't even have to tie flies!
You don't have to worry about not being a good enough fly tier. We don't care if you use Granny knots or if there's more glue on your finished fly than any other material: the attitude you'll encounter most often is the fish are the judges, and if it works, it's O.K. You will find that someone will always be willing to offer help if asked, or to lend some of that crucial material that's left home on your tying bench.
Whether you come to tie flies, watch flies being tied, watch our fishing-related videos, join in the fishing-related chatter, learn about S.A.E.N, or just sample the refreshments, you will be welcomed. It's friendly and it's free!
We were honored by a visit in November 1996 from renowned fly tier Ron Alcott, who took the time to tie a classic fly (
the Black Doctor) as a demonstration. Ron was in town to give a course in tying classic Salmon flies, and to offer
encouragement to our two youngest members, he presented each of them with a classic fly he tied during his stay here.
He also presented S.A.E.N. with a limited-edition copy of his book, which he and his wife had signed.
Many of our fly tiers are enthusiastic supporters of the activities of S.A.E.N., and volunteer their talents at our various fundraising events. S.A.E.N. is represented at local outdoor recreation exhibitions by a dedicated group of fly tiers and other volunteers who keep our booths occupied full-time. The tiers especially draw the attention of the patrons, and many stop by to buy flies, raffle tickets or S.A.E.N. memberships, and often will stay to discuss the issues we are concerned with.
